CHSE revises plus two syllabus in Odisha

BHUBANESWAR: The academic council committee of the Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) approved new syllabus for plus two courses in the line of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) here on Tuesday. The new course will be implemented from 2016-17 academic session, official sources said. "The new syllabi is aimed to help Odia students fare better in various competitive and national level entrance exams like JEE, CAT, MAT, XAT and other competitive jobs," said CHSE chairman Basudev Chhatoi. "The new syllabi was prepared by syllabus committees on different subjects comprised of senior plus two teachers and subject experts from across the state," he added.

The new syllabus focused on objective pattern questions as in CBSE syllabi while the examination pattern will also be changed accordingly, a senior officer said. The decision of revision of syllabus in plus two level was taken following an enquiry by the office of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) about how many students from the state qualified the JEE (Main) and JEE (advance) in 2013-14. The CAG also sought information about the number of students from the state took admission in premier institutes like Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and National Institute of Technology (NIT), the officer added. "A fact finding team formed by the higher education department to study the poor performance of state board students in competitive exams suggested a series of amendments including revision of syllabus," said a senior officer.

CHSE completed the process of revising the syllabus in October and submitted it for review of the academic council committee, Chhatoi added. Of the total of 46, 096 students from Odisha who appeared the JEE Mains only 3,202 students had qualified for the JEE Advanced. Only 1364 (15%) students from CBSE and 130 (12%) from ICSE and 1688 (4.7%) from CHSE had cleared the JEE (Main). Only 6.95 percent students from Odisha were able to make it to JEE (Advanced).
