Institute Chair launched at IIT Madras Department of Management Studies

CHENNAI: Prof Sridhar Tayur, an IIT Madras alumnus, who was on campus earlier this week to deliver a "Leadership Lecture", launched an "Institute Chair" in the Department of Management Studies at IIT Madras. The Chair is endowed with an amount of Rs. 50 lakh, and is established in the name of 'RAGS Family Foundation' that has also made other philanthropic gifts in the areas of higher education, entrepreneurship, independent films, microfinance and children's health, development and safety. Prof R Nagarajan, Dean of International & Alumni Relations at IIT Madras, welcomed the establishment of the Chair and stated, "This is another sign of the continuing support that IIT Madras enjoys from our alumni. They contribute time, talent and treasure, and we value them all equally," according to an official release. The Board of Governors of IIT Madras has created "Institute Chair Professorships", to be occupied by professors who have distinguished themselves and have been recognized by their peers for their research and/or technology development, and who have excelled in teaching and service to the Institute/ nation/ profession.

Their achievements are expected to demonstrate leadership in one or more of these aspects. Institute chair professors are appointed for a period of five years followed by a review and possible extension. Chair professors receive a monthly honorarium in addition to other benefits. Prof Kamalanabhan, head of the Department of Management Studies at IIT Madras, also welcomed the Chair calling it 'a significant step forward for DOMS'. He added, "This chair will help in bringing in eminent people from academia for short visits to the department to teach and interact with faculty and work on collaborative projects." Prof Tayur expressed his delight at his alma mater's acceptance of the Endowment, and said, "It is very fulfilling, both professionally and personally, to be able to endow this chair. Additionally, I look forward to fruitful collaboration with faculty and interacting with exciting startups from IITM, especially those that also have a social mission."
