Govt Intermediate Colleges Big Increases admissions in Telangana

The Telangana government’s decision to completely waive the tuition fee for Intermediate students in Government Junior Colleges and to supply textbooks free of cost is paying dividends. There is a big increase in enrolments for junior intermediate in the current academic year and in some colleges the students’ strength has reached the maximum limit leaving no scope for any new enrolments. GJC (Girls) and GJC (Boys) in Nalgonda, GJC (Girls)-Mahbubnagar and colleges in Suryapet, Kodad, Maddur (Mahbubnagar) are some in this list. Even the number of enrolment, state-wise, has seen a big jump this year. It is hovering in the mid-90,000s with around over 10 days to go. for closure of admissions this year.

According to Intermediate JAC president Madhusudhan Reddy, the enrolment trend this year was a big achievement considering in 2014 it was just around 60,000. In the last academic year (2015-16) the enrolment was nearly 80,000, an increase of twenty thousand from the previous year. Apart from government decision to waive-off fees, the initiative of teachers’ fraternity to go for a door-to-door campaign at towns and mandal level to impress upon parents to join their children in government run colleges has worked, he said. The Telangana government is taking several initiatives to ensure government colleges do not lose out on admissions to private colleges in the state. One of the proposals under consideration is extending Mid-day meal scheme even to Intermediate students, stated a lecturer from a government college in Hyderabad.
