HRD to battle seat vacancies in IITs and NITs

Despite conducting six phases of counselling for IITs and NITs admission, around 3, 000 seats across the technical institutes are lying vacant.


In a bid to battle the falling proportion of seats in the IITs and NITs, the HRD Ministry has constituted a 3-member committee headed by IIT Kharagpur Director, Partha Pratim Chakraborty on Tuesday. Every year, thousands of seats have been lying vacant at the IITs and NITs. Despite conducting six phases of counselling for IITs and NITs admission, around 3, 000 seats across the technical institutes are lying vacant. Learning about the increasing number of vacancies, which the HRD Ministry considered as a waste of resources, the ministry attempt to conduct another round of counselling to fill every seats across the institutes.


Seats vacant in technical institutes: Of the 3, 000 seats lying vacant, 73 seats were in the IITs There are over 1, 518 seats lying vacant across the NITs NIT Agartala - 126 seats vacant, NIT Nagaland - 107 seats vacant, NIT Rourkela - 101 seats vacant, NIT Srinagar - 108 seats vacant, NIT Jalandhar - 110 seats vacant, NIT Surat - 115 seats vacant As many as 1, 409 seats were lying vacant across the centrally funded technical institutes besides IITs and NITs.
