JNU's Exams to be online

On Wednesday, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) accepted its various schools recommendations on conducting examinations in view of the lockdown imposed to contain coronavirus. Owing to the pandemic, the classes were cancelled and there was uncertainty over the situation regarding the resumption of classes and exams. The varsitys schools and special centers were asked to apply their recommendations and these were approved electronically by the varsitys Academic Council. On April 20, the JNU Academic Council endorsed a resolution via online dissemination, thereby validating class holding and providing student study guidance by faculty members from all schools and special centers, it said.

The council also accepted the recommendations submitted by the deans of schools and chairmen of special centers on the methods of conducting semester examinations in their respective schools / centres, keeping in mind the difficulties of observing the usual academic calendar and the daily mode of such examinations in view of the ongoing lockdown related to coronavirus pandemic, the varsity said. The Academic Council allowed the Vice Chancellor to approve any additional suggestion / request that might come from any school or special center to complete the current academic session and start the new academic session, he said.

Offline examinations will only be possible after lockout, officials claim, while schools and centers will perform online assessments if a agreement with students is reached on them. The JNU Teachers Association demanded that the proceedings of the AC meeting which was never, be declared null and void and the question of the completion of the winter semester be addressed at properly convened meetings of study boards and special committees after proper completion of the discussion process at the level of the Centre. The body of teachers also said the proposal was distributed to AC leaders on April 19, and they were asked to pass on their approval by April 20.
